Each on stepped square base with cut corners, tapering baluster stem and spool-shaped socket, each engraved on base with Royal arms within garter motto with Royal crown above, marked underneath
6¾ in. (17 cm.) high
44 oz. 12 dwt. (1,388 gr.)
The arms are those of King George I (1714-1729).

Lot Essay

Samuel Margas was Subordinate Goldsmith to the King from 1723-30 and 1732-33. His most important surviving work is a wine-cistern of 1714 made for the Marquess of Crewe (see A. G. Grimwade, London Goldsmiths: 1697-1837, London, 1976, p. 591).
