Pierre Jean David is widely thought to have been one of Frances most important and infuential sculptors of the first half of the 19th century. He revolutionised portraiture, depicting contemporary figures as they were, void of any idealised classicism and stereotyped poses. His copious writings were published in their entirety in 1958, and now regarded as pivotal in understanding French art.
