Original yellow cloth, printed label on spine and a spare label tipped onto the rear endpaper (spine label quite heavily rubbed, spine darkened, covers stained, bumped, without the dust-jacket). Provenance: pencil annotation to last free endpaper suggesting the real-life identities of characters and locations in the novel; a few passages also marked in pencil. FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR’S FIRST NOVEL, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the front free endpaper, “For O[ttoline] M[orrell] with love Aldous.” A loosely-inserted autograph note by Anthony Hobson states that the pencil annotation is by Philip Morrell. The country house of Crome, where much of the novel is set, was based on Garsington Manor, the home of the Morrells. "Lady Ottoline was offended by Crome Yellow and a breach ensued that lasted many years" (Bedford, Aldous Huxley, 1973).
