The well-cast censer is finely chased and gilt in relief with mythical beasts gambolling amidst a sea of crashing waves, between a band of confronted phoenix to the waisted neck and archaistic phoenix to the foot. The censer is flanked by a pair of stylised dragon-head loop handles. The centre of the base is incised with the six-character mark, Yunjian Hu Wenming zhi, 'Made by Hu Wenming of Yunjian', contained within a rectangular panel.
