MARK OF WALTER & JOHN BARNARD, LONDON, 1887

These figural salt cellars were designed by French sculptor Louis-Victor Fréret (1801-1879) for Barnard’s in the 1860s.  This pair of figures was dubbed the “High Life;” another pair of figures depicting a peasant couple was referred to as the “Low Life.”  A pair of “High Life” figures from 1862 is illustrated in John P.
