ALKEN, Henry. The Right Sort. London: S. and J. Fuller, 1821-1822.

Oblong 2° (315 x383mm). 6 hand-coloured lithographs by C. Hullmandel after Alken, interleaved with blank Whatman paper of the same date. Mid 20th-century green half morocco, front cover with green morocco gilt title label, spine directly lettered between raised bands and with Schwerdt arms at foot (spine slightly rubbed). Provenance: C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (binding and bookplate; purchased in his sale, 20 June 1939, lot 804).

AN EARLY SERIES ‘OF GREAT RARITY’ according to Spitz’s own notes, issued without a title-page. Top-hatted huntsmen in rich scarlet handle their horses with consumate ease; of course this does not save them from journeying home in gruelling rain and bespattered with mud at the end of the day. ‘A very sympathetic and instructive set, admirably drawn and brilliantly coloured. One of the author’s favourites,’ states Schwerdt, the former owner of this copy. Very few Alken prints are in the lithographic medium. The plates are watermarked J. Whatman 1820 or 1821. Schwerdt III, p. 83; Siltzer 59.
