2º (334 x255mm). 52 hand-coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland, D. Havell, M. Dubourg, J. Hill et al after W. Heath, of which 49 are in three states: hard engraving, aquatint and hand-coloured aquatint; 2 in two states: coloured and uncoloured aquatint; and one in one state: the frontispiece, hand-coloured aquatint. (Some occasional minor marginal soiling, a few trifling foxmarks.) Contemporary red cross-grained morocco gilt, gilt edges (rebacked preserving original spine); cloth slipcase. Provenance: acquired from Ackermann, Chicago, 1944.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, LARGE-PAPER COPY. The vignette on the title is uncoloured as called for in the first issue, and the plates have pre-publication watermarks. As an artist, Heath specialised in military themes and in caricature, and this is probably the best known of his illustrated military books. Abbey Life 365; Tooley 281: 'Large-paper copies exist with the plates in three states.'
