According to a note in the collection files Michael S. Robinson believed that the drawing was probably from close to 1700 (for similar drawings see, for example: M.S. Robinson, Van de Velde Drawings: A catalogue of drawings in the National Maritime Museum, Cambridge, 1958, I, nos. 470 and 692, pls. 108, 158).
