A comparable drawing, showing a man seated smoking a pipe and described as 'Manner of Pieter Quast', is in the Herzog Anton-Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig (inv. Z 2561). Peter Schatborn has suggested that both drawings could be rare examples of studies from life by Quast.
