达明安• 赫斯特的作品中常引用基督教宗教艺术及图像，此幅丝网印刷版画的标题是出自《圣经》“我的上帝，我的上帝，为甚么离弃我？”（诗 22:1）但 这句更广为人知的出处其实是耶稣基督受难被钉于十字架上时所说的铭言。此作中的蝴蝶翅膀排列参考了欧洲大教堂花窗及昆虫学家收藏标本的图样，寓意科学即为新兴的世俗宗教。
