RUDYARD KIPLING (1865-1936)
A 2-page autograph letter, signed, from Bateman's, Burwash, Sussex, December 8th, 1916, to Mr. Bush, discussing military matters: "I happen to know the new commander of the in-large-part new, I imagine, Spitfire. She applied to me the other day for a motto. I gave her 'Tooth and Nail' and I don't think it looks half bad round the Spitcat on the torpedo. As to your two quartermasters, the report distinctly states that they 'requested to be relieved' from the wheel for 36 hours. If refusal of lawful orders, for a period extending over one day and a half isn't mutiny -- what is? The fact that each man had only one workable arm, of course didn't make any difference to their way of looking at their job. They must be a glorious pair!" framed and glazed, 7 x 5in.
