ELIZABETH FRY (1780-1845) & JOSEPH JOHN GURNEY (1788-1847)
A 3-page autograph letter, signed with initials, dated Upton Lane, 28th January 1837, from Elizabeth Fry, to her sister-in-law Catherine Gurney, discussing the illness of her brother, Joseph Gurney: "The last part of thy account is more encouraging as to his having more ease ... how important to seek and pray for the hopeful trustful quiet spirit may we all do it ... I advise formentations on the painful part & particularly recommend Joseph being in every way quiet bodily and mentally" (creased on folds, hole not affecting text). Together with Elizabeth Fry's Texts for Every Day in the Year (Norwich: [1831], small 4°), and an accompanying one-page autograph note of 11 lines, signed, from Elizabeth Fry regarding the book -- and a 3-page autograph letter from Joseph John Gurney, dated Norwich, May 31st, 1822, to his niece, Priscilla Buxton.
