This unusual set was likely a special commission by Litchfield's, one of the most prominent purveyors of china in late 19th century London. As Frederick Litchfield, commented in his 1879 tome Pottery and Porcelain, the Meissen factory’s “chief fault” was its “want of vigour in taking fresh ground” and the firm made a number of such special commissions with an eye to rejuvenate the factory’s designs.
