OTTOMAN TURKEY, LATE 19TH CENTURY
On short straight foot, with tapering body and short rounded shoulders rising to a straight neck, with flaring spout and sinuous handle, the bole-red, blue, yellow, green and aubergine painted decoration consisting of an elongated calligraphic cartouche flanked by four pear-shaped calligraphic medallions rising from a floral vine, amidst profuse floral ground, the shoulder with repeating pennants, the mouth with further calligraphy above floral and palmette motifs, on white ground

For a similar jug in the Suna and Inan Kirac Collection in Istanbul and attributed to the late 19th century, see Sebnem Akalin and Hulya Yilmaz Bilgi, Delights of Kutahya, Istanbul, 1997, cat. 128/226, pp.128-129. On the published example, the inscriptions painted on the jug read 'Can you not drink water brought by an arched eyebrow [i.e. a beautiful girl]' and 'Health' and 'Please Drink'.
