A PALE GREENISH-WHITE JADE HAIR PIN
CHINA, YUAN-MING DYNASTY (1279-1644)
The head carved in openwork as a phoenix with raised head, spread wings and long tail feathers that curve up onto either side and under the body; together with a small white jade hair pin, Ming dynasty, the pin curving slightly towards the rounded head, the white stone now with opaque brown and ivory-colored alteration
8 1/8 and 2 7/8 in. (20.8 and 7.3 cm.) long, one box

Hair pins similar to both of the present hair pins, also dated Ming dynasty, are illustrated by Chan Lai Pik in Chinese Jades: The Dr. S. Y. Kwan Collection, Art Museum, Institute of Chinese Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012, no. 118, carved with a very similar openwork phoenix, and nos. 122-124, with a similar shape to the pin and rounded head.
