The plinth with frieze drawer, the figure holding rotating sphere with hours, her head and arm moving when striking; the rectangular plates joined by plain ringed pillars, with engraved fixed barrel for time and plain fixed barrel for the strike, the bottom plate with inset calibrated steel countwheel and later spring balance, floral engraving and signed 'Paullus Schiller'

The present clock belongs to a small group of similar figures by the Nuremberg maker Paullus Schiller, master in 1617, d.1634. (Maurice op. cit., p.55, figs. 376-381). One of this group, fig. 381, sold from the collection of Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Berge, Christie's, Paris, 23/25 February 2009, lot 721.
