This pattern of 'Thousand Buddhas' was prominent in early Buddhist cave paintings on the Silk Road, such as those found in Dunhuang and was most probably the inspiration for this brocade panel. Compare to another panel of a later Ming date illustrated Jacqueline Simcox, Chinese Textiles, Spink & Son, London, 1994, no. 19.
