Chinoiserie flat chased ornament is found for a relatively short period from 1679 until around 1697. Almost all examples were London made and by many makers and of differing quality. The majority of pieces fall into the period 1680-1685, this porringer being one of the earliest examples. Sources for the ornament were illustrated travel books and imported goods such as Chinese porcelain and silver, Indian cottons, lacquer work and Chinese silver.
