The sitter was a Marshal of France and was created Duke of Valengin in 1806 and Vice-Constable of the Empire in 1807. He was given the title of Prince of Wagram in 1809 following his service to Napoleon during the Peninsular War. He had entered the Army at a young age and served during the American Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars.
