The inscription on the scroll may be a reference to the play 'Oedipe', an adaptation of Sophocles' Athenian tragedy 'Oedipus the King', by the French dramatist and philosopher Voltaire. It was first performed in 1718 and the production ran for 45 performances receiving great critical acclaim and marking the start of Voltaire's success in his theatrical career. It was revived in 1723 and remained in the répertoire of Comédie-Française until 1852.
