QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The bowl is painted to the exterior with three cartouches enclosing western figures engaging in various activities such as playing the qin and drinking wine, all surrounded by floral blooms and scrolling foliage. The cover is painted with leafy blooming peony branches. The base is painted with a diagrammatic Jesuit mark in black ink.
The bowl, 4 ¾ in. (12 cm.) diam.

The mark is identified as a Jesuit mark in The China Institute in America, Chinese Painted Enamels from Private and Museum Collections, October 23 1969-February 1 1979, with a comparable example illustrated on the base of a Qianlong period painted enamel bowl from the collection of Mr and Mrs David Stockwell no. 20.
