The fleur de pêcher marble top above a foliate-cast frieze and central cupboard door mounted with a relief medallion, the columnar angles with putti, on toupie feet, the reverse of the bronzes incised 'HPR', the lockplate stamped 'DUVIVIERPARIS / 77 F. ST ANTOINE'

It has been speculated that this fine commode could be from the workshop of François Linke owing to the distinctive standing figures of putti which support the angle columns and which compare closely to putti used by Linke to embellish some of his Louis XVI style furniture (see Lot 2).

Although the cabinetmaker of the present lot is not known, the reverse of the some of the gilt-bronze mounts are incised in places with the letters ‘HPR’: a stamp identified with Henri Picard, a Parisian fondeur and doreur renowned for the production of high quality pièces de table and garnitures de cheminés. Picard also worked on the petits appartements of Emperor Napoléon III at the Louvre.
