A RARE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL MAGPIE ON A PERCH
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The black and white bird is shown with head lowered and turned as it preens its wing while standing on a perch that rises from a globular tripod base decorated with bat-filled ruyi collars and lotus scroll above and below a band of key fret, the whole supported on a circular platform that forms the top of a similarly decorated, domed stand with ruyi feet joined by a ruyi apron.

Compare the pair of cloisonné enamel magpies of this type, also shown with head held in a similar position, and standing on a perch supported on a cloisonné base, illustrated by Gunhild Avitable in Die Ware aus dem Teufelsland: Chinesische und japanische Cloisonné-und Champlevé-Arbeiten, von 1400 bis 1900, Frankfurt am Main, 1981, p. 179, pl. 100, where they are dated to the 18th century.
