The drum case flanked by the standing bacchante with youthful satyr to her shoulder, on a naturalistic ground embellished with trailing vines, symbols and pipes, the bleu turquin rectangular section plinth above a stepped base with leaf-capped ovolo and guilloche banding, the later white enamel dial with pierced gilt hands and signed ‘F.Berthoud A PARIS’, the twin barrel movement with recoil anchor escapement and countwheel strike to bell

Only one other clock of the same design is recorded, the movement by Maniere, in the Nissim de Camondo Museum (and illustrated here). The figural group, traditionally attributed to Clodion, is after a terracotta model by Jean-Joseph Foucou (1739-1815) ‘Bacchante portant un satyre enfant sur l’epaule gauche’ in the Beaux-Arts Museum, Orleans.
