Downman fecit/June 1790' (on the backboard) and with inscription 'no. 10/John Thomas Henry/Somerset born Aug.st 30.th/1787/Fitzroy James Henry/Somerset born Sep.r 30th/1788/' (on a fragmentary sheet attached to verso of stretcher) and in another hand 'Lady Fitzroy Somerset August 1842/The Gift of Lord Edward Somerset.' (on the backboard)
