The USA has recently changed its policy on the import of property containing elephant ivory. Only Asian Elephant ivory may be imported into the USA, and imports must be accompanied by DNA analysis and confirmation the object is more than 100 years old. Buyers will be responsible for the costs of obtaining any DNA analysis or other report required in connection with their proposed import into the USA. A buyer’s inability to export or import a lot is not a basis for cancelling their purchase.

The date on the reverse of both bracelets suggests that they were made to commemorate the sitters’ marriage, which took place in the same year. The miniature of Victoria, Princess Royal, is after Winterhalter’s oil on canvas portrait of June 1857 (now in the British Royal Collection, inv. no. 404580). For two signed enamel miniatures of Victoria, Princess Royal, by William Charles Bell, also after the Winterhalter portrait, see V. Remington, Victorian Miniatures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, London, 2010, I, p. 49, nos. 29 and 30.
