A medallion of James I (1566-1625), King of England 1603-1647, wearing an ermine-trimmed surcoat, standing ruff, the collar of the Order of the Garter and a Greater George, engraved on the obverse 'IR / Jacobus D.G. Mag. Britt. Fra & Hybe Rex' and on the reverse, engraved with the coat of arms of James I and the garter and motto of the Royal Order of the Garter, as well as ' IACOBVS DEI GRATIA MAGNAE BRITANNIAE FRANCIAE ET HYBERNIAE REX / BEATI PACIFICI'

Simon de Passe (1595-1647) was the son of the engraver Crispijn de Passe (1567-1637) and his wife Magdalene (1555-1635). Of the couple's five childen, four went on to become engravers. Simon moved to London in 1616 where he became an accomplished portraitist known for engraving royal portraits such as the present example. In 1624, he moved to Copenhagen and became the Danish royal engraver and designer of medals.
