EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Inlaid overall with foliate scrolls, with a green gilt-tooled leather writing-surface and three frieze drawers to each side, each pedestal with a panelled door enclosing a pair of adjustable shelves, the sides with a slide enclosing a double-hinged reading-slope above a pair of adjustable shelves, on a plinth base with sunken castors, the metalwork later, the reading-slopes originally with book-stops, reduced in size and with consequent replacements
29.3/4 in. (75.5 cm.) high; 62.1/2 in. (159 cm.) wide; 35.3/4 in. (91 cm.) deep

A related pedestal desk, with ebony-inlaid panels, attributed to Marsh and Tatham, probably supplied to Frederick, 5th Earl of Carlisle (d. 1825) was sold from Castle Howard, Yorkshire, Sotheby's house sale, 11-13 November 1991, lot 157 (£60,500). Another, similar ebonised -inlaid mahogany pedestal desk was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 16 November 1990, lot 336 (£27,500).
