'FURNITURE IN IRREGULAR FORMS SIDE 1', A PAINTED BIRCH, FORMICA AND ALUMINIUM CHEST OF DRAWERS ON WHEELS, DESIGNED IN 1970, FIRST PRODUCTION, MANUFACTURED BY AOSHIMA SHOTEN Co. Ltd.

Due in part to the subsequent post-1986 production by Italian manufacturer Cappelini, this cabinet originally designed in 1970, is now established as one of Shiro Kuramata's most iconic works. The first examples, including the present lot, were produced specifically to-order. A distinctive characteristic of these early examples, due in part to the then-absence in Japan of thermo-molding processes, was the utilisation of multiple 4 mm. plywood panels to achieves the complex curvature of the flanks.

Ce cabinet, conçu en 1970, est devenu l'îcone de l'oeuvre de Shiro Kuramata, notamment en raison de son édition en 1986 par Cappelini. Les premiers exemplaires uniquement produits sur commande - et dont notre exemplaire fait partie - sont réalisés à partir de plusieurs panneaux de contre-plaqué de 4 mm. d'épaisseur superposés permettant d'obtenir des formes courbes à une époque où les techniques de thermomoulage adéquates n'existaient pas encore au Japon.
