The striking ivory border design of the present lot filled with hexagonal polychrome cartouches is archaic in feel. A similar example with the same saturation of colour was sold in Rippon Boswell, 18 November, 2006, lot 51. The inky-blue field with the tomato-red inner arrow head stripe is a design that is used frequently by weavers in Talish in the latter half of the 19th century, as seen on an example sold in these Rooms in The Battilossi Tappeti D'Antiquariato sale, 11 February 1998, lot 58. It seems likely from its construction and design that this rug was woven at the end of the 18th century.
