The inscription under the base reads, The Gift of Mrs. Ann Mody to her Godson Oldfield Bowles January 1740.

The arms are those of Bowles for Oldfield Bowles of North Aston, Oxfordshire (1739-1810). Bowles was a landowner and noted amateur artist, musician, and botanist, as well as a friend and patron of the painters Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds.
