A DANISH GILT-BRASS AND COPPER TIMEPIECE TABLE CLOCK
CARL VON MANDERN, COPENHAGEN, LATE 17TH CENTURY
CASE: of square section with moulded borders and glazed shaped apertures to all sides, raised on bun feet, hinged underside DIAL: the silvered chapter ring with Roman hours and Arabic minutes to the outer ring, foliate half-hour markers, alarm disc to centre, later blued steel hands, matted centre and pierced foliate spandrels MOVEMENT: the timepiece movement with verge and balance wheel escapement, chain fuse, four turned pillars, signed ‘Carl von Mandern / Copenhagen’ ALARM: the separate later associated alarm assembly of square section with engraved panels, with two iron locating arms and trip release to upper centre; with later winding key; together with a fitted green leather veneered George III hinged box; and a modern perspex viewing case; with an undated hand written description and drawing of the two mechanisms joined together on letterhead marked ‘CARL RANCH’s / EFTERFOLGERE / KJOBENHAVN’
The table clock – 2.3/8 in. (6 cm.) high; 3 in. (7.6 cm.) square; the alarm – 2.1/4 in. (5.7 cm.) high; 2.3/4 in. (7 cm.) square; the leather case – 7.1/4 in. (18.4 cm.) wide
