The form and carved decoration of the sofa is closely related to a suite of furniture in the Long Gallery of the Palazzo Albrizzi, Venice, comprising at least six white-lacquered and gilt sofas together with armchairs and console tables (C. Alberici, Il Mobile Veneto, Milan, 1980, p. 254, fig. 376). The intricately pierced backrests may be derived from models for chairs, first published by Matthew Darly in 1751, and reissued in The Chair-Maker's Guide, 1766 (E. Colle, Il Mobile Rococò in Italia, Milan, 2003, p. 362).
