The present mirror is conceived in the English rococo manner popularised by designers such as Thomas Chippendale, Matthias Lock and Thomas Johnson. While it is rare to find examples of such size, the frame of a Chinese-export reverse-painted mirror measuring 23 x 17¼ in. bears marked stylistic affinities with the present mirror, and features a virtually identical cresting. Closely related in overall form, the frame of the reverse painted mirror was created by William Gould circa 1758, and suggests the possibility that the present frame was similarly intended (the mirror sold Christie's, London, 9 June 2005, lot 201, £57,600 including premium).
