A PAIR OF IRON-RED-DECORATED 'DRAGON' WINE CUPS
DAOGUANG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARKS IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD (1821-1850)
Each cup is potted with tall rounded sides, supported on a short foot. The exterior of each cup is delicately painted in iron-red to depict two five-clawed dragons amidst stylised scrolling clouds, above crested waves with sea spray.
2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) diam.

A very similar pair, also dating to the Daoguang period, was in the Scheinman collection, sold in Christie's New York, 2 December 1989, lot 384, then sold by the Estate of Ruth Phillips in the same rooms, 29 March 2006, lot 534. A similar pair of wine cups dating to the Xianfeng period (1851-1861) from the Kwan Collection is illustrated in Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, Hong Kong, 1983, p. 97, pl. 87.
