The sitter is William Pennington (1713-1790), a mill-wright and inventor, of Castle Mills, Kendal. Gardner, originally from Kendal, was a great friend of Pennington's son, also named William, who served as mayor of Kendal twice, firstly in 1786-1787 and again in 1803-1804.
