A very similar carving of three geese, of approximately the same size, described as a brushholder (brush rest), from the Palace Museum Collection, Beijing, is illustrated in The Life of Emperor Qianlong, Macao Museum of Art, Macao, 2002, p. 220, no. 63.25. The details of the feathers and the millet, and the composition of the three birds relate very closely to the present carving.
