Mr Screwdown the undertaker and a widow

Dressed in widow's weeds and clasping a large handkerchief, a buxom woman is addressed by a young man on bended knee even as her husband's coffin is being carried out of her house. The ancestral portrait on the wall behind, handsomely framed, provides a clue as to her situation and the young man's aspirations. The same woman, distinguished by her classical features (rather in the mould of Mrs Siddons) makes an appearance in other drawings by Rowlandson.
