AFTER A DESIGN BY ALEXANDRE GUERIN, CIRCA 1825

The present chandelier most certainly derives from a design executed by Alexandre Guérin circa 1828 (ill. in I. Sychev, The Russian Chandeliers, St. Petersburg, 2003, p. 174).
The spherical body, urn-shaped tooled finial and distinctive mask headed scrolled branches all relate the present chandelier to the oeuvre of the bronzier, who worked in St. Petersburg from the 1810s to 1848, in a sophisticated Empire style, undoubtedly inspired by the work of Pierre-Philippe Thomire (discussed in I. Sychev, Russian Bronze, Moscow, 2003, p. 111).
