Dutch trading companies expanded the export in Chinese and Japanese porcelain in the 17th century; between 1604 and 1657, over 3 million pieces of porcelain reached Europe, and in 1700, trading ships unloaded 146,748 pieces in a European port in one day alone as the market for porcelain grew insatiable. Chinese porcelain was particularly prized for the purity of its colour and durability; the application of intricate and costly metalwork demonstrating the high esteem in which it was held. The idiosyncratic figures on the gilt metalwork of the following two examples also feature on 17th century Dutch silverware including a very similar military figure on the knop of a wager cup, c. 1625, and on the finial of a standing cup and cover (Ed. A.L. den Blaauwen, Dutch silver 1580-1830, Gravenhage, 1979, pp.202-203, fig.98). Comparable shaped spouts of mythical beasts can also be found on Dutch silver tea wares, in particular a teapot dated 1714, and tea-kettle of 1738 (Album Rijksmuseum Amsterdam; Masterpieces, 1952, no.153). Furthermore, late 17th/early 18th century Dutch red stoneware teapots by or attributed to Ary Jansz de Milde and Jacobus de Caluwe with silver or silver-gilt mounts also feature comparable animal figures mounted on the handles, further supporting the attribution of the metalwork used on the following two teapots to a Dutch bronzier or orfèvre.
