Cast from a model by Emmanuel Frémiet, two armoured figures mounted on horses on a naturalistic base signed 'E. FREMIET', the figure of Charles the Bold on a rearing horse in the act of vanquishng an enemy, the edge of the base inscribed 'CHARLES LE TEMERAIRE', on a shaped rouge marble socle

Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910), perhaps best known for his large scale monuments and equestrian statuary, sculpted numerous small figures, groups of animals and historical figures throughout his long career. His famous monumental works involving armoured equestrian figures include Jeanne d'Arc located at the Place des Pyramides, Paris and Bertrand du Guesclin, Dinan
