ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

In 1812 Gillows, renowned for their high-quality mahogany furniture, supplied eight similar luggage-stands with reeded legs to Wilbraham Egerton for Tatton Park, Cheshire. They cost £1 16s 0d. each (see N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pp. 11 and 12, fig. 14A). In the early part of the 19th century such items became standard in the bedroom apartments of numerous country house fitted up by Gillows.
A matched pair of related stands probably supplied for Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, was sold by The Lord St. Oswald; Christie's, London, 14 June 2001, lot 49 (£14,100 including premium).
