Of breakfront serpentine outline with a yellow onyx top above a frieze centred by a drawer and with shuttered blocks, above a panelled cupboard enclosing a shelf and flanked on each side by marbelised open shelves with pierced galleries, with tapering turned and fluted uprights and similar feet, the onyx top replaced, inscribed in blue chalk 'NY NO 46'

The design derives from the French commode à l'anglaise, the name given in France probably specifically because of the popularity of the model in England. This was in large part due to the influence of the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre. Heir to Simon-Philippe Poirier's (d.1785) atelier, Daguerre supplied objets de luxe to the French Court and, after the Revolution, to the English nobility also. Based in the rue St. Honoré, as his trade label reveals he 'Tient Magafin de Porcelaines, Bronzes, Ebénisterie, Glaces, Curiosités, & autres Marchandifes. In 1787, Daguerre was commissioned to supply the furnishings for George, Prince of Wales at Carlton House under the direction of Henry Holland, the leading proponent of the 'French' taste in England.
