MARK OF PAUL DE LAMERIE, LONDON, 1741
Baluster and on stepped spreading foot, with acanthus scroll-capped handle, engraved with a coat-of-arms within foliage mantling, marked underneath
4¼ in. (11 cm.) high
10 oz. 17 dwt. (337 gr.)
The arms are those of Powys impaling Spence, for Thomas Powys of Lilford, co Northampton and his wife Henrietta, whom he married in 1740, daughter of Thomas Spence of Palgrave, co. Norfolk, Serjeant of the House of Commons. Spence died on 29th June 1737, 'of two broken legs, occasioned by his jumping out of a chaise which his horses were running away with.' Rather tragically the Gentleman's Magazine records on the 15th July following 'Mr. Stephens, surgeon to the Prince of Wales; his death was occasioned by his fatigue in sitting up to attend Mr. Spence, one of whose legs he cut off.' Thomas Powys' son, also Thomas (1743-1800) was created 1st Baron Lilford.
