Jean-Baptiste Saunier, maître in 1757, established premises on the rue de Charenton, Paris. He was the second son of the ébéniste Charles Saunier (whose workshop was on the rue du Faubourg Saint Antoine) and uncle of the very famous ébéniste Claude-Charles Saunier.
Although little is known about his life and production, the present lot, stamped JB SAUNIER, was first recorded in the Baron Lepic's sale, 18 June 1897, lot 49, Paris. The provenance was probably that of Ramel de Nogaret, a famous French Minister during the late 18th/early 19th century. The buyer was the international dealer Jacques Seligmann.
