A BRONZE CIRCULAR MIRROR
EASTERN HAN DYNASTY (25-220)
The main field is cast in crisp relief with a dragon and a lion separated by bosses from the deities Dongwanggong and Xiwangmu shown seated with attendants, all encircled by an inscription and narrow decorative bands that continue up to the inward-canted rim. Together with a bronze circular 'shan' mirror, late Warring States period, 4th-3rd century BC, which has a ribbed loop set within a square border which forms the center of an intricate design of leaves conjoined by overlapping bands that form an eight-pointed star overlaid with four large 'shan' characters, all reserved on a a ground of hooked feather-like scrolls; and another small bronze mirror, Eastern Han dynasty, which is flat cast with four pairs of confronted phoenixes between an outer arc border and a quatrefoil motif enclosing four characters and the central knob.
