The plain center of the interior is encircled by a narrow band of prunus blossoms floating on waves, which is repeated on the everted rim above a wide band of three long-tailed birds shown amidst dense, leafy peony scroll. Two are in flight, while the third is perched on a pierced rock. The outwardly curved exterior is carved with continuous peony scroll issuing from an outcropping of rock and reserved on a gold ground.

Compare the carved lacquer shallow dish of comparable size, that also has a plain center surrounded by carved decoration, and is dated to the Song dynasty, illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, Chugoku no shikkogei (Chinese Lacquer Art), Shoto Museum of Art, Tokyo, 1991, p. 71, no. 81. Another carved black and red lacquer dish, no. 82, is similar in shape and size to the present dish, but does not have a plain center.
