Giuseppe Bonomi established a reputation for himself in his native Rome, before moving to England in 1767, where he joined the practice of Robert and James Adam as a draughtsman. He worked for them until 1781 and afterwards set up his own practice, where the young J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) occasionally worked with him as a draughtsman. In 1789 he became an Associate of the Royal Academy, with the support of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Bonomi only returned to Italy once, in 1783-4, where he visited Angelica Kauffman, although in 1804 he was appointed honorary architect of Saint Peter's in Rome.
