According to Nagler (N. 589), the Monogrammist CR was active around 1544 and probably a goldsmith. He records eight prints of landscapes by this anonymous master. The gilt plates were found built into a precious armoire in the Imperial Collection in Vienna and were re- printed in the 19th century. No contemporary impressions from these plates have come to light. The present print appears to be the only other known print by this mysterious etcher and is undoubtedly an impression from the late 16th century. One other, trimmed impression is at the British Museum.
