Xu Lin (1462-after 1548) was born in Changzhou county (nowadays Suzhou in Jiangsu province) and later lived in Nanjing. At the age of nine, he already began practising calligraphy in large characters in the styles of Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072) and Yan Zhenqing (709-785) and Zhu Xi (1130-1200). Later he started and excelled at imitating the style of Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322). Xu was also famed for painting landscapes, flowers, pines, bamboos, banana trees and rocks.
